With fuel economy and emissions requirements continuing to tighten around the world, new and old technology are being evaluated to develop more efficient engines. Electric vehicles are competing for a place in light duty vehicles (assuming supporting changes to optimize and cleanup the electrical grid can be done in parallel). However, internal combustion engines are here to stay, at least for the foreseeable future, for a number of heavy duty markets. Can the opposed piston engine be the latest in internal combustion engine efficiency?
